Properly labeling your items is crucial for accurate identification during Pick Up, Storage, and Delivery. Quality control is a top priority, and you adhering to these Labeling Instructions will help us maintain the high service standards we promise to deliver.
Here’s What You’ll Need Access To
- A Printer (see info below section for Printing on or Near Campus at SCAD Savannah)
- Scissors (optional, but recommended)
- Label Sleeves (provided at Material Distribution)
- Oversized Item Tags (provided at Material Distribution)
- Item Labels (printed by you)
- Tape (optional, but recommended)
Printing Your Item Labels
Your Item Labels are accessible as a PDF document that can be downloaded from your My Account section at CampusCarriers.com, and will be printed by you.
- Login to My Account
- Click the link that says Print or Download My Item Labels
- Confirm that the printer you are using is NOT set to zoom the document, is NOT set to be double-sided, or is set to otherwise change or distort the document in any way.
- Print this document on standard 8.5” x 11” printer paper.
This document will likely contain more than enough Item Labels, so you are unlikely to use all of them. However, having the extras printed in case you need them is important, so you should print the entire document.
Ensure that your Item Labels print clearly with the proper amount of ink. Each Item Label must have a clearly printed barcode.
Below is an example of what Item Labels will look like once printed:
Printing on or Near Campus at SCAD Savannah
- You or a Friend’s Own Printer - If you have your own personal printer, you can print your own labels using it. Be sure to check the settings and ensure the printed document is not being changed in any way.
- SCAD Printer Locations - There are several options for SCAD students to print at academic buildings and other locations throughout the SCAD campus that students are familiar with.
- FedEx Office & Ship Center - located on W. Broughton or any other third-party printing service provider that could print 8.5”x11” documents.
Inserting Your Item Labels into Label Sleeves
Label Sleeves are designed to hold your Item Labels. Securing your Item Labels to your items using Label Sleeves and Oversized Item Tags, as further explained below, is essential for properly identifying your belongings during Pick Up, Storage, and Delivery.
Follow these instructions to properly insert your Item Labels into the Label Sleeves provided to you at Material Distribution for each of the items you plan to have picked up and stored:
- Once your Item Labels have been printed, you will cut out each Item Label using a scissor to follow the dotted line for each Item Label (or by very neatly folding and tearing them out). Once cut out, these Item Labels must be inserted into Label Sleeves.
- Each Label Sleeve has a pocket, opened on one end, for you to insert an Item Label.
- Insert your cut out Item Labels into the Label Sleeves for each of the items you plan to have picked up and stored.
Label Only the Items Listed on Your Reservation
It is important to note that you will place only a single Item Label on each of the items you have added or will add to your Reservation to be picked up and stored. For example, an item like Metal Shelves should be labeled as one single item with only a single Item Label; do not apply labels to the multiple pieces of it (shelves, poles, etc). A single Item Label should be placed, and the entire unit should be bound together to be moved and identified as one piece.
Adhering Label Sleeves to Your Items
Label Sleeves are a convenient way to affix your Item Labels, printed on standard printer paper, to the items you’ve planned to have picked up and stored.
You will use Label Sleeves on your items being stored that have flat surfaces for which the Label Sleeves can be adhered, such as boxes, plastic bins, televisions, microwaves, mini-fridges, etc.
Follow these steps to adhere a Label Sleeve to one of your items:
- First, make sure you have followed the instructions above for Inserting Your Item Labels into Label Sleeves. You will do this for each of the items you will be labeling. It is easier to place your Label Sleeve onto items if the Item Label has already been inserted into the Label Sleeve.
- Before adhering any Label Sleeves, be sure to wipe the surface where you will place the Label Sleeve of any dust or debris. The surface should be clean and dry before continuing.
- Begin by peeling off only the top portion of the backing on the Label Sleeve.
Note that the top portion of the Label Sleeve is the side with the opened plastic pocket. - Face the top of the Label Sleeve, now with adhesive exposed, toward the flat surface of the item you are adhering the Label Sleeve to. Proceed by adhering the top portion of the Label Sleeve by pressing firmly.
Note that when labeling boxes and Plastic Bins, you should always place the label in the top left corner of the short side. Do not place labels on the top or the long side of the box or bin. - Once the top portion of the Label Sleeve is adhered, proceed with peeling the bottom portion of the Label Sleeve.
- Now with the adhesive of the bottom portion of the Label Sleeve exposed, proceed by securely adhering the bottom portion of the Label Sleeve by pressing firmly.
- It is recommended that once you adhere a Label Sleeve with an Item Label within it, that you further secure the Item Label into the pocket of the Label Sleeve with tape to seal the opened pocket and to prevent the Item Label from falling out.
Using Oversized Item Tags for Your Items
Oversized Item Tags are used for the items you have planned to have picked up and stored that do not have flat surfaces that a Label Sleeve can be adhered to. This includes, but isn’t limited to, bicycles, metal shelves, floor lamps, etc. For these items, you will adhere a Label Sleeve to an Oversized Item Tag before securing it to your item.
Note that if you do not have any Oversized Item Tags listed on your Material Distribution List, the items on your Reservation that you plan to have picked up and stored may not require them. If you feel you require an Oversized Item Tag but have not received any, send us a message.
Follow these instructions to FIRST adhere a Label Sleeve to each of the Oversized Item Tags you plan to use:
- Remember to first follow the instructions for Inserting Your Item Labels into Label Sleeves.
- Begin by peeling off only the top portion of the backing on the Label Sleeve.
Note that the top portion of the Label Sleeve is the side with the opened plastic pocket. - Face the top of the Label Sleeve, now with adhesive exposed, toward the flat surface of the Oversized Item Tag you plan to use. See the image below to understand the correct orientation for placing the Label Sleeve onto the Oversized Item Tag.
Proceed by adhering the top portion of the Label Sleeve by pressing firmly. - Once the top portion of the Label Sleeve is adhered, proceed with peeling the bottom portion of the Label Sleeve.
- Now, with the adhesive on the bottom portion of the Label Sleeve exposed, proceed by adhering it to the Oversized Item Tag by pressing firmly.
- Further secure the Item Label within the Label Sleeve, now attached to the Oversized Item Tag, by placing tape to close the pocket of the Label Sleeve.
Follow these steps to secure Oversized Item Tags (with your Label Sleeves now adhered to them) to your Oversized Items that do not have flat surfaces:
- Locate the metal wires for the Oversized Item Tag. Each Oversized Item Tag has two metal wire strands.
- Use the metal wires to secure the Oversized Item Tag to an area of your Oversized Item at a point where it will not slip off.
Be sure to twist the metal wire strands several times until you feel it is secure.
Labeling and Writing Your Name On Corrugated Boxes
If your Reservation includes corrugated cardboard boxes, be sure to place your Label Sleeves with Item Labels inserted onto the top left corner of the short side of your box, not the long side.
When placing the label on the short side, allow for a bit of a border so that the Label Sleeve is not directly on the edge of the box, risking it getting snagged and peeled off.
Remember that when labeling boxes, you should always place the label in the top left corner of the short side. Do not place labels on the top or the long side of the box or bin.
Write your full name and Reservation ID on the top of each box as an added level of labeling.
Item-Specific Guidance to Consider When Labeling Oversized Items
Below is additional guidance for labeling specific types of items that can be picked up and stored. If any of these items are part of your Campus Carriers Reservation, please review these additional notes regarding the labeling process for each.
Please note that at this point of the process, all of the items you plan to have picked up and stored should be packed according to our Packing Tips and Instructions.
We recommend that Label Sleeves are placed on items in an inconspicuous location but a location still apparent to someone that would be picking up the item. A good example of this is with a television – don’t place the Label Sleeve directly on the screen, but rather on the back of the television.
Area Rugs
Area rugs should be rolled and bound according to our Packing Tips and Instructions.
First, confirm that your rug has been properly bound and wrapped with tape to keep it rolled together.
Once properly bound, place a Label Sleeve with the printed Item Label within it onto the rug by peeling the top backing off of the Label Sleeve.
Continue by peeling the bottom backing of the Label Sleeve and pressing to secure it to the rug.
It is highly recommended that the entire Label Sleeve and rug is then wrapped around with a single strip of tape to further secure the Label Sleeve and Item Label to the rug.
Bean Bags (and other primarily fabric items)
Oftentimes, these types of items may include zippers. If a zipper is present, check to see if there is an eyelet on the zipper that would allow you to use an Oversized Item Tag in combination with a Label Sleeve and Item Label.
If a zipper as described is not present, place the Label Sleeve, with the Item Label inserted, onto the item and then place a strip of packing tape to secure it. Be sure that the barcode on the Item Label is still visible.
Bicycle
There are many places to put an Oversized Item Tag on a bicycle, but please place your Oversized Item Tag on the right-hand handlebar, combined with a Label Sleeve and Item Label.
Fans
Many fans include a grate to block the fan blades. This is often the best place to secure an Oversized Item Tag, combined with a Label Sleeve, and Item Label. If this is not possible, resort to securing the Oversized Item Tag on the handle or base of the fan, wherever it is most secure.
Mattress Pad
Mattress Pads should be rolled and placed in a large trash bag to protect from dust and debris as detailed in our Packing Tips and Instructions.
Once properly packed, a Label Sleeve with an Item Label can be placed directly onto the trash bag that the Mattress Pad is packed within.
We recommend putting a small strip of tape toward the top of the label as well to further secure it to the trash bag and the Item Label within the Label Sleeve.
Portfolio
Portfolios are generally best labeled using an Oversized Item Tag, combined with a Label Sleeve, and Item Label. The Oversized Item Tag can be secured to the handle of the Portfolio. If there is not a good location to secure an Oversized Item Tag, you can instead place a Label Sleeve with an Item Tag inserted directly onto the flat outside surface of the Portfolio.
Rolling Cart/Utility Cart
There are many locations on a Rolling Cart/Utility Cart where an Oversized Item Tag could be placed, but please secure the Oversized Item Tag, combined with a Label Sleeve and Item Label, toward the top handles/bars of the Rolling Cart or utility Cart rather than the bottom.
Suitcase/Duffle Bag
Secure an Oversized Item Tag, combined with a Label Sleeve and Item Label, onto the handle of the Suitcase/Duffel Bag.
Office Chair
Secure an Oversized Item Tag, combined with a Label Sleeve and Item Label on the right-hand armrest of the Office Chair. If there are no armrests, place the Oversized Item Tag on the adjustment lever of the Office Chair.
Special Note
If any of the above guidance does not apply to the item due to the way it is designed, proceed with using your best judgment to place Oversized Item Tags and/or Label Sleeves combined with Item Labels. The ultimate goal is securing the identifying Item Labels for each and every item that you have planned to have picked up and stored and, make sure the information from the Item Labels, including the barcode, remains visible.
